Armenia won’t change Constitution under foreign pressure: FM

PanARMENIAN.Net - During a joint press conference with the OSCE Chairperson-in-Office, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan declared that Armenia has never agreed, and will not agree, to change its Constitution at the demand of any third party.

He acknowledged that Azerbaijan continues to raise the issue as a precondition for signing a peace agreement, but reaffirmed that Armenia rejects this demand.

“This is solely for our citizens to decide. It is a matter of the domestic political agenda. Yes, Azerbaijan keeps raising this as a precondition for the peace treaty, but we do not accept it,” Mirzoyan said, as reported by Aysor.am .

Previously, on April 16, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan told reporters that he believes Armenia’s new Constitution should not reference the Declaration of Independence. “In my opinion, the new Constitution should not include a reference to the Declaration of Independence. But I want to emphasize again that the final decision lies with the people of Armenia. Political forces can argue for or against,” Pashinyan said at the time.
