Armenia crowns 2025 Greco-Roman wrestling champions

After two days of competition, the final bouts of the 2025 Armenia senior Greco-Roman Wrestling Championship concluded at the sports complex adjacent to the Charentsavan city stadium.

A total of 69 athletes took part in the championship, Armenpress reports.

According to weight categories, the champions of Armenia’s Greco-Roman wrestling championship are: Manvel Khachatryan (55 kg), Suren Aghajanyan (60 kg), Karen Aslanyan (63 kg), Yura Hovsepyan (67 kg), Gaspar Terteryan (72 kg), Samvel Terteryan (77 kg), Samvel Grigoryan (82 kg), Gevorg Tadevosyan (87 kg), Hayk Khloyan (97 kg), and Albert Vardanyan (130 kg).

At the initiative of the Wrestling Federation of Armenia, five foreign referees were invited to officiate the championship matches.

The finals were attended by Armenia’s first Olympic champion Armen Nazaryan, Olympic gold medalist and multiple European and world champion Artur Aleksanyan, members of the national federation’s leadership, and Deputy Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport Hasmik Avagyan.

Head coach of Armenia’s Greco-Roman wrestling national team Armen Babalaryan said changes are planned for the national squad, with new athletes set to be included.

“I truly enjoyed the championship. New athletes emerged, which is encouraging, as several wrestlers can compete in each weight category, creating internal competition within the team. The event was very well organized by both the Wrestling Federation of Armenia and the Charentsavan municipality,” Babalaryan said.

The head coach noted that Artur Aleksanyan, Slavik Galstyan, and Malkhas Amoyan did not take part in this year’s championship.

“There will be changes in the team. I already see several athletes in different weight categories who will join the national squad. Young wrestlers must integrate with the seniors, and if the experienced athletes fail to maintain their positions, they will be replaced by the younger ones,” he added.

He also said that Armenia’s national team will hold its first training camp of 2026 starting on January 10.
