Russia is considering the possibility of expanding the list of goods supplied to Armenia via the territory of Azerbaijan, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexey Overchuk said on the air of the Russia 24.
Overchuk noted that, in addition to grain, the supply of fertilizers is being discussed, as well as options for transporting cargo from Armenia to Russia, Sputnik Armenia reports.
“A very important event has taken place, which we truly consider significant: the first train loaded with Russian grain has passed to Armenia through the territories of Azerbaijan and Georgia. That is, for the first time in more than 30 years, during the period of independent existence of Armenia and Azerbaijan, the first train carrying grain has passed,” he said.
According to the deputy prime minister, detailed work has now been carried out on the possibility of using this transport corridor for other types of cargo, including mineral fertilizers.
Overchuk also recalled that earlier a train carrying petroleum products had been sent from Azerbaijan to Armenia by rail. At the same time, Moscow and Yerevan have discussed prospects for reverse transit — transporting goods from Armenia to Russia via Azerbaijani territory.
He added that such steps seemed unlikely until recently, but are now beginning to take on practical substance.
On December 23, it became known that a new batch of grain from Russia had been sent to Armenia via Azerbaijan.
Earlier, on December 15, Armenia’s Minister of Economy Gevorg Papoyan told journalists that new shipments of wheat from Azerbaijan to Armenia were currently en route. According to him, Armenian business representatives also discussed the option of exporting brandy along the same route, but found the overland export of bottled products impractical.
