Russian Ambassador to Armenia Sergey Kopyrkin has stated that the Trump Route initiative could have implications for Armenia’s membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). He made the comment in an interview with Noyev Kovcheg, as reported by Auroranews.am.
According to him, so far, only the ambitious title —Trump’s Route for International Peace and Prosperity — has been made public. “To our knowledge, practical steps toward its implementation have not yet begun. Our position will be formulated once the initiative takes concrete shape,” Kopyrkin said.
He added that the Trump Route could affect Armenia’s EAEU membership, since the movement of goods through Armenia is regulated, among other things, by the union's legislation. “We are open to substantive consultations with our Armenian colleagues on this matter,” he emphasized.
Kopyrkin also highlighted that Russia consistently supports the unblocking of transport routes in the South Caucasus. He noted that progress in this area has so far relied on trilateral agreements signed by the leaders of Russia, Armenia, and Azerbaijan between 2020 and 2022.
“We believe that the relevant processes should take into account the interests of all countries in the region and their neighbors,” he added.
In Washington, Armenian, Azerbaijani, and U.S. leaders—Nikol Pashinyan, Ilham Aliyev, and Donald Trump—officially agreed to launch the "Trump Route".
According to Trump, “The corridor will allow Azerbaijan to reach Nakhichevan while fully respecting Armenia’s sovereignty. Armenia is also forming an exclusive partnership with the U.S. to develop this corridor. The term can be extended up to 99 years, with another 99-year extension promised after that. We expect major infrastructure developments. American companies are eager to enter these countries and invest heavily, bringing economic benefits to all three nations.”
On September 11, Pashinyan stated that Armenia had not leased land to the U.S. for 99 years but had granted construction rights instead.
