U.S. President Donald Trump has once again addressed the Armenia–Azerbaijan peace process, stating he achieved results in just one day. Trump made the comments during a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“Putin told me, ‘I can’t believe you settled this war. I’ve been trying to do it for 10 years.’ And I literally did it in one day,” Trump said.
He explained that trade pressure played a decisive role.
“I told them both: you’ll lose trade. I said we’ll cut off trade and impose 200% tariffs. The next day they called and said ‘okay.’ It was a 35-year conflict, but they accepted,” Trump said.
On August 8, during a trilateral meeting at the White House with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, and President Trump, a joint declaration was signed outlining the results of the Washington meeting.
Also in Washington, in the presence of U.S., Armenian, and Azerbaijani leaders, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov pre-signed a “Peace and Interstate Relations Agreement between the Republic of Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan.”
