Supporters of prominent businessman Samvel Karapetyan, who is currently under house arrest, have registered a new political party called Strong Armenia, according to data from the state registry.
The new party has been founded on the basis of the Mer Dzevov (Our Way) movement, Sputnik Armenia reports.
Movement spokesperson Marianna Ghahramanyan said the organizational work for the party’s creation is in its final stages. She added that the political force will soon present a concrete agenda and its vision for the country’s development.
A press conference by Narek Karapetyan, the movement’s coordinator, is scheduled for January 20.
On December 30, a court replaced Samvel Karapetyan’s detention with bail and house arrest, and he was transferred home the same day. However, on January 16, the Anti-Corruption Court of Appeals overturned the decision by Judge Sargis Petrosyan, which had placed Karapetyan under house arrest. Later, lawyer Vardevanyan announced that Karapetyan’s inpatient treatment had been interrupted and he was transferred to the Yerevan-Kentron penitentiary. On January 17, the Anti-Corruption Court reinstated house arrest as a pre-trial measure.
