Armenian army marks 34th anniversary

This year, the Republic of Armenia marks the 34th anniversary of the formation of its Armed Forces.

The establishment of Armenia’s military coincided with the years 1992–1994, during which newly independent Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh were effectively at war with Azerbaijan, prompting the urgent need to build a national army.

On January 28, 1992, a government decision titled "On the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Armenia" legally formalized the foundation of the Armenian National Army. In May of that year, the Ministry of Defense initiated the first military conscription campaign, laying the groundwork for the tradition of compulsory military service.

Since 1992, the Armenian army has undergone major development and is currently undergoing a series of reforms.

In his message marking the 34th anniversary of the Armed Forces, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated that in recent years, significant investments and reforms have been implemented. He noted that a large quantity of modern weaponry and military equipment has been acquired "of a quality and capability our army has never had before."
