Attorney Amram Makinyan has issued a statement responding to remarks by representatives of the Civil Contract party, who criticized supporters of Samvel Karapetyan, claiming they seek to amend Armenia’s Constitution for one individual’s tenure.
“Civil Contract members are making posts and criticizing, claiming that Samvel Karapetyan’s supporters want to amend the Constitution of Armenia for the tenure of a single person — Samvel Karapetyan. Seriously?
Weren’t you the ones who in 2020 initiated constitutional amendments solely to remove Hrayr Tovmasyan from the post of Chairman of the Constitutional Court?
Moreover, those changes were implemented in a single day and were essentially aimed at terminating the tenure of one individual.
Furthermore, you took that step when it became clear that the political processes carried out against him were not yielding results.
Therefore, if anyone, Civil Contract members at the very least have no moral right to accuse others of intending to amend the Constitution,” the statement reads.
Earlier, Narek Karapetyan, coordinator of the Mer Dzevov movement, explained the legal procedures through which Samvel Karapetyan’s nomination for the post of prime minister could be made possible, referring to Article 148 of the Constitution.
Lawyer Siranush Sahakyan noted that Article 148 is not among the unamendable provisions of the Constitution, and therefore its revision does not require a referendum, as more flexible mechanisms are предусмотрены, the statement says.
