Zurabyan says first president seeks opposition unity

First President Levon Ter-Petrosyan has assumed the role of a political patriarch and is seeking to ensure the consolidation of the opposition, Levon Zurabyan, the Armenian National Congress candidate for prime minister, wrote on his Facebook page.

“The First President is acting from above-party positions. As the founder of the Third Republic, he has assumed the role of a political patriarch, attempting to secure the unification of the opposition in order to remove Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan from power. If this succeeds, we will only welcome it, because opposition unity is a crucial task in addressing the challenges facing the republic. But we also understand that this mission may fail, and in that case the Armenian National Congress has its own clear position and actions.

If the First President’s efforts are crowned with success, then we will fight together. If not, we will nevertheless not abandon our struggle, because we have our own vision of how Armenia should be governed in the future and how to lead the country out of its current situation,” he wrote.

Earlier, Levon Ter-Petrosyan had stated that the only force capable of uniting the fragmented opposition is Samvel Karapetyan, chairman of the Strong Armenia party.

“It is necessary to finally understand that uniting the opposition is not a political issue, but simply a matter of national salvation. Being a self-sufficient and accomplished individual, Karapetyan is capable of solving that problem,” he had said.
