A court has ordered the arrest of Alexander (Sashik) Sargsyan, the brother of Armenia’s third president Serzh Sargsyan, the Anti-Corruption Committee said, according to Radar Armenia.

However, Sargsyan is not currently in the country.

According to investigators, within the framework of a criminal case examined by the Main Department for Investigation of Particularly Important Cases of the Investigative Committee, Alexander Sargsyan has been accused of embezzlement on an especially large scale.

Specifically, authorities say that between 2001 and 2018, using the influence stemming from being the brother of Serzh Sargsyan, who served as Armenia’s defense minister from 2000 to 2007, he persuaded the heads of the Military Police Department of the Ministry of Defense serving during that period to embezzle particularly large amounts of state funds entrusted to them.
