Kocharyan says 2020 war could have been avoided

Former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan said that if his team had been in power in 2020, the war would not have occurred, speaking on the Big Politics podcast.

Armenia’s second president, Robert Kocharyan, заявил that if they had been in power in 2020, there would have been no war. He made the remarks during the “Big Politics” podcast.

“If we had been in power, there would have been no war. If we had been elected in 2021, Nagorno-Karabakh would certainly not have been emptied, because we would not have signed that foolish declaration in Prague that changed the entire configuration. I have no doubt about this,” he said.

Kocharyan also noted that they have no revanchist ambitions.

“Such claims are spread because there is nothing else to spread,” he added.

Azerbaijan launched a large-scale attack against Nagorno-Karabakh on September 19, 2023, subjecting the region to massive shelling. As a result, a day later, on September 20, the authorities of Artsakh accepted a ceasefire proposal from the command of the Russian peacekeeping mission, agreeing to Baku’s conditions, including disarmament of the Defense Army and dissolution of the Republic of Artsakh. As a result of the attack, 223 people were killed, including 20 civilians, six of whom were minors. Starting from September 24, the forced displacement of Artsakh Armenians began, with more than 100,000 people forcibly displaced to Armenia. According to some data, about 20 Armenians remained in Artsakh, of whom 11 also returned to Armenia, one died, and one was detained.
