Court to rule on David Minasyan detention April 1

A decision on the pre-trial detention of David Minasyan, one of the twin brothers involved in the incident at St. Anna Church, will be announced at 12:00 on April 1.

The investigators petitioned to detain David Minasyan for two months, Panorama.am reports.

Speaking to journalists, one of David’s lawyers, Varduhi Elbakyan, earlier said that the Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction, chaired by Judge Mnatsakan Martirosyan, had been examining the issue for three hours.

“In my assessment, the investigating body cannot substantiate the submitted motion,” the lawyer said, according to Sputnik Armenia.

Regarding David’s condition, throughout the hearing, he held his lawyer’s hand, and the court allowed him to answer questions while seated.

Another defense lawyer, Sergey Harutyunyan, said the documents submitted by the defense team were sufficient to prevent such a detention request altogether.

“There are no grounds whatsoever. The assumptions that he may commit new crimes—linked to the current situation, upcoming elections, and so on—are completely unfounded. All these arguments are baseless. In my opinion, the issue is purely about creating a precedent,” Harutyunyan said.

The lawyer also stressed that law enforcement should have initiated entirely different proceedings related to obstruction of a religious ceremony, referring to actions by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and security personnel.

David and Mikayel’s mother, Gayane Minasyan, addressed the court in an open letter, asking that her son remain free until the main hearings.

“Due to health issues, since the age of four David has required round-the-clock special care. As a doctor, I personally take care of his health daily. As a parent, as a mother, I ask for your understanding, as my 18-year-old son’s condition is incompatible with detention and may have fatal consequences,” she wrote.

She also assured that the family is ready to support an impartial investigation.

On March 29, an incident occurred at St. Anna Church involving Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. As the prime minister was leaving the temple, one attendee addressed a bodyguard with dissatisfaction, saying, “Don’t look at me like that.” Another person attempted to strike in Pashinyan’s direction. The prime minister instructed his bodyguards to remain calm and not intervene. Later, three individuals were detained on suspicion of hooliganism and interference with the lawful official and political activities of a public official. Two of them were twin brothers, David and Mikael Minasyan.

On March 30, investigators conducted a search at the brothers’ residence. On March 31, it became known that criminal proceedings had been initiated against the three young men under articles related to hooliganism and interference with official or political activities. Today, a preventive measure was chosen for one of the twins, Mikael Minasyan—travel restrictions and bail set at 5 million drams.
