Karapetyan confident of victory despite house arrest

Strong Armenia party leader Samvel Karapetyan said the party assesses its chances in the upcoming elections at 100%, speaking after a session at the Anti-Corruption Court.

He described the court’s decision to extend his house arrest by three months as expected, according to Panorama.am.

“From these authorities, no other decision could have been expected; what we anticipated has happened,” he said.

Karapetyan added that he would not have entered politics at all if injustices did not exist in the country.

He also responded to Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s statement suggesting that failure to be re-elected could lead to war.

“He needs treatment,” Karapetyan said.

Strong Armenia member and constitutional expert Gohar Meloyan stated that “Armenia’s next prime minister will go directly from house arrest to the prime minister’s office.”

She added that while there is hope the court will remain guided by conscience and law, the political struggle continues.

According to Meloyan, the current authorities will not be able to stop the changes demanded by society through intimidation or interference in legal processes.

Armenia’s Anti-Corruption Court has extended the house arrest of Strong Armenia party leader, businessman and philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan for another three months. The defense had requested to lift the restrictions.
