Co-author of the Armenian Genocide memorial complex and museum-institute, head of the renovation architectural team Sashur Kalashyan, presented the reasons behind the necessity of the work carried out.
According to him, the salt accumulation on the interior stones of the memorial had already “angered everyone,” prompting a decision to discuss the issue with the relevant authorities, 1lurer.am reports.
It was said that the existing problem could not be resolved through localized repairs of the pylons and required full-scale renovation.
“We discussed numerous options and proposals, and the final conclusion was that partial intervention would have no effect. In order to solve the issue, a comprehensive overhaul was needed, including re-waterproofing the rear sections of the monument’s pylons,” he said.
The launch of renovation works at the Armenian Genocide memorial sparked significant controversy over alleged poor organization and execution. Former director of the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute, Hayk Demoyan, staged a protest at Tsitsernakaberd, speaking about the scale and consequences of damage caused under the guise of restoration. Architect Anahit Tarkhanyan, founder-director of the Arthur Tarkhanyan Center, also presented a video.
