Consul attends Genocide memorial event in Montebello

Armenia’s Consul General in Los Angeles took part in a commemorative event in Montebello, paying tribute to the victims of the Armenian Genocide.

On the 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, Armenia’s Consul General in Los Angeles Anna Avetisyan and the consulate’s diplomatic staff attended the annual event held in Montebello, where they laid flowers at the memorial dedicated to the victims.

The event was organized as part of initiatives commemorating the Armenian Genocide by the United Armenian Council of Los Angeles, the Armenian Consulate in Los Angeles reported.

The ceremony was also attended by leaders of the Western Diocese of the Armenian Apostolic Church in the United States, as well as representatives of the Armenian Catholic Church in North America and Canada and the Armenian Evangelical Union of North America. Members of the U.S. House of Representatives and the California State Legislature were present, along with officials from Los Angeles County and the cities of Montebello and Glendale, as well as representatives of community organizations and institutions.

In his annual April 24 message, Donald Trump again referred to the Armenian Genocide as “Meds Yeghern.” The United States has officially recognized the Armenian Genocide at the level of both the president and both chambers of Congress, while the 46th U.S. president, Joe Biden, has used the term “Armenian Genocide” in his April 24 statements since 2021. During his first presidency, Trump also used the expression “Meds Yeghern,” previously employed by Barack Obama in 2009.
