“Shakkar” film wins award in U.S.![]() April 29, 2026 - 13:40 AMT PanARMENIAN.Net - The film “Shakkar” by Gyumri-born actress, screenwriter, and producer Mariam Vardanyan, who is based in the United States, has received an award at the Myrtle Beach International Film Festival. The film was named first runner-up in the “Best Foreign Feature” category, according to Radar Armenia. The Myrtle Beach International Film Festival (MBIFF), held in South Carolina, is considered one of the top independent film festivals in the United States, according to MovieMaker Magazine. The award recognizes independent filmmakers for creative originality and technical excellence. The film was shot in Gyumri. Vardanyan starred in the lead role and also served as co-writer and co-producer of the project. Ara Aivazian said Azerbaijan continues the traditions of Turkey after seizing territories and forced Armenians out. The creative crew of the Public TV had chosen 13-year-old Malena as a participant of this year's contest. She called on others to also suspend their accounts over the companies’ failure to tackle hate speech.
