Ishkhan Saghatelyan, a member of the Supreme Body of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (Dashnaktsutyun, ARF) and an MP from the Hayastan parliamentary faction, said during a Facebook livestream that, in essence, he is being accused for filing an asset declaration.
He said that he himself disclosed in the declaration that he possessed cash, had reported it for years, and specified where it was kept, its amount, and its source. Therefore, he argued, the accusation is "not for failing to submit a declaration, but for submitting one."
"After my apartment was searched, the Investigative Committee issued a statement saying criminal proceedings had been initiated over allegedly unlawful actions involving property under seizure and for avoiding the submission of a property declaration. To put it as mildly as possible, that statement has no connection whatsoever with reality.
First, I have taken no action involving any property under seizure. That is a fact. Second, what does it mean to say I avoided submitting a declaration? I was the one who disclosed in my declaration that I had cash. I submitted declarations not only to the State Revenue Committee but also to the Corruption Prevention Commission. In other words, instead of one declaration, I submitted two. Therefore, the two grounds mentioned have no basis in reality," he said.
Saghatelian added that if investigators had summoned him for questioning, they would have received answers to all of their questions, but they did not do so.
"In essence, without overcoming the barrier of parliamentary immunity, they brought charges, creating a deadlock. They could not have invited me under any other status. Either that is why they did not summon me, or, had they done so, they would have received answers to these questions and would have had to close the case. Therefore, what I am accused of, or what they are trying to portray through these propaganda attacks, has no connection either with reality or with due legal process," he said.
Saghatelyan added that, regardless of everything else, people should not allow such actions and attitudes to distract them from the main agenda.
On the morning of June 23, at 8:30 a.m., law enforcement officers entered the apartment of ARF Supreme Body representative and Armenia parliamentary faction MP Ishkhan Saghatelyan and searched his home and vehicles. Later, lawyer Sergey Harutyunyan said the search had concluded without any items being found. He stated that the criminal proceedings against Saghatelyan concerned money that had already been declared.
