The Strong Armenia alliance has condemned the actions taken by the current authorities against Prosperous Armenia party leader Gagik Tsarukyan, stating that their primary objective is to silence opposition forces.
"This is yet another example of the ongoing mass political persecution in the country.
The main purpose of the continuing repression by the current authorities is to silence opposition forces. The use of the law enforcement system as a political weapon delivers a severe blow to the country's economy and investment climate.
It is evident that none of this has public support. Armenia needs change that will ensure the rule of law, an independent judiciary and the well-being of society," the Strong Armenia alliance said in its statement.
On the morning of July 6, officers of Armenia's National Security Service, State Revenue Committee and Ministry of Internal Affairs Police carried out simultaneous searches at more than 70 locations, including Tsarukyan's residence and companies affiliated with him. Tsarukyan was detained. A hearing on the preventive measure sought against him has begun at the Court of General Jurisdiction of Avan and Nor Nork administrative districts.
