In 1957 he left Moscow Academic Art Theatre (Vasily Toporkov's school). Since 1969, he has worked in Sovremennik theatre. Gaft's performances are characterized by intellectual wittiness and irony often amounting to sarcasm. In addition to performances, Gaft has also acted in feature films which brought him fame. The actor was shot in "Garage" (1979), "Barons of Crime" (1988), "Encore, Encore!"
