Prices for low bandwidth Internet drop by 30% in Armenia

PanARMENIAN.Net -
Internet retail prices were cut nearly twice in early 2010. As Samvel Arabajyan, member of Public Services Regulatory Commission told a press conference on Monday, retail prices for high bandwidth Internet significantly reduced, while low capacity Internet (28 Kbps) rates decreased by 30 per cent.

"Although PSRC’s decision about Internet rates reduction had to come into force on 1 January 2010, many providers either cut prices in November-December last year, or doubled and tripled the bandwidth for the same rate," he said.

According to RA law "On Electronic Communication", PSRC does not regulate retail tariffs for Internet subscribers, they are fully regulated by the market. "The regulator is responsible for ensuring equal conditions for all actors, who by investing in the sphere of electronic communication can provide the best quality for users," he said. Samvel Arabadjyan also expressed confidence that the prices will continue to reduce in Armenia.

In November 2009 PSRC decided to set a maximum tariff for the wholesale Internet at AMD 174 thousand per month for 1Mbps, almost twice less than previous rates.
