Stepan Safaryan: U.S. Secretary of State touched upon democracy problems in Armenia

During her visit to Armenia, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton did not refer to the March 1, 2008 events and political prisoners problem, as this issue was not included in the agenda, said Stepan Safaryan, head of Heritage parliamentary group.

“Nevertheless, she touched upon democracy problems in the republic, including the recently adopted law on TV and Radio,” Safaryan told journalists on July 6.

Asked why Secretary Clinton did not meet with opposition representatives in Armenia and Azerbaijan but did so in Ukraine and Georgia, Safaryan noted that Ukraine and Georgia are Euro-Atlantic oriented countries, unlike Armenia and Azerbaijan.

“This was the reason for a wider scope of meetings in Ukraine and Georgia,” he said.
