Stepan Safaryan: through discussion of Karabakh issue NATO PA legalizes Azerbaijan’s aspiration to unleash war

Head of Heritage parliamentary group Stepan Safaryan said that Azerbaijan wants the Karabakh conflict to be discussed by the NATO Parliamentary Assembly to promote its ideas about the territorial integrity.

Azerbaijan pursues two goals through this step: it wants to exploit pro-Azerbaijani resolutions for additional pressure, if international force centers oblige Armenia to make concessions in the Karabakh issue, or legalize possible hostilities through similar documents, Safaryan told a press conference in Yerevan.

“Armenia should take actions to deprive Azerbaijan of the opportunity to fulfill its goals in international structures. Armenia’s delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly should also apply to the NATO PA committees, urging them to refrain from discussing the Karabakh issue,” he said.

The head of Heritage parliamentary group added that if the NATO PA does not consider Armenia’s calls, it should bear responsibility for Azerbaijan’s attempts to legalize hostilities. “If the Karabakh issue is discussed by the NATO PA, Armenia should start working actively with the rapporteur on it. We would not have been concerned over the Azerbaijani initiative, if there were no pro-Azerbaijani wordings in 1416 resolution of the Council of Europe. All similar resolutions quote each other,” concluded Stepan Safaryan.
