Can Russian military base hamper Armenia-Turkey rapprochement?

Military psychologist, member of the public council at the RA Ministry of Defense David Jamalyan commented on the recent decision of Turkish National Security Council to remove Armenia from the list of countries posing a threat to Turkey.

“If we’re not perceived as a threat to Turkey, nothing should hamper the normalisation of bilateral ties without preconditions,” the expert told a news conference in Yerevan.

“Although Armenia was removed from the list, Russia still stays in it. Thus, Russian military base in Armenia might be an impediment on the way to normalization. Besides, Turkey has concluded a military agreement with Azerbaijan. If we’re no longer rivals, I wonder who this agreement is aimed against,” Jamalyan said, adding that Turkey’s further steps will prove the sincerity of country’s intentions.

“Ankara’s decision might be just another propagandist step to extrude Russia from the region,” he concluded.
