Ruling coalition signed declaration to avoid Egyptian and Tunisian scenarios in Armenia, expert says

Publicist Tigran Paskevichyan said that the signing of the ruling coalition’s declaration was conditioned by the Armenian authorities’ fear of repetition of the Egyptian and Tunisian events, which resulted in a change of power.

“If the coalition forces are partners and constitute a united team indeed, they should not have faced such a matter [support of one single candidate in the 2013 presidential elections],” Paskevichyan told a press conference in Yerevan.

According to him, the coalition declaration’s signing was an attempt to consolidate the pro-governmental forces.

Analyst Arthur Pepanyan noted for his part that the coalition’s declaration was a heavy blow to the attempt to polarize the authorities. “The score is 2:0. President Sargsyan celebrated a victory, but the people have suffered a defeat,” said Pepanyan.

On February 17, the parties to the Political Coalition - the Republican Party of Armenia, Prosperous Armenia party and Orinats Yerkir party - signed the Declaration of the Political Coalition.

On behalf of the Republican Party it was signed by RA President, Chairman of the Party Serzh Sargsyan, on behalf of Prosperous Armenia - by Chairman of the Party Gagik Tsarukyan, and on behalf of Orinats Yerkir - by Chairman of the Party Arthur Baghdassaryan.

“The Coalition partners are confident that sustained implementation of the reforms will further increase the political role of the Coalition and public trust toward it, resulting in the amplified participation of the Coalition at the RA National Assembly after the parliamentary elections. Furthermore, at the presidential elections the Political Coalition will come up with one single nomination in the person of the current President, creating thus guarantees of further continuance of the changes and sustainable development of our country for the next five years,” the Declaration reads.
