Mares on Darchinyan-Perez bout: it’s going to be a great fight

Current WBC Silver bantamweight world champion Abner Mares (21-0-1, 13 KOs) of Mexico will take on IBF bantamweight world champion Joseph ‘King Kong’ Agbeko (28-2, 22 KOs) of Ghana on April 23 at the Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE in Los Angeles, California.

In the co-feature bout, former bantamweight world champion Yonnhy ‘El Colombiano’ Perez (20-1-1, 14 KOs) of Colombia faces Vic ‘Raging Bull’ Darchinyan (35-3-1, 27 KOs) for the vacant IBO bantamweight title.

“I normally don’t watch the fights on any of my opponents the reason is I think they’re going to always come in with a different game plan and they’re fighting a fighter that’s different from anyone he’s faced so I really don’t like to look at tapes. I know that he’s a tough fighter to beat; he’s a hard nosed fighter, great chin, takes a lot of punches but gives a lot of punches too. I expect a tough fighter but I think he’s a fighter that’s there to get hit so we’re going to capitalize on that and take advantage when he makes mistakes,” Mares said, quoted by fightnews.com.

Commenting on the Darchinyan-Perez bout, he said: “It’s a really tough fight for both of them. Darchinyan likes a fighter that stands in front of him and Yonnhy can be that way at times and just stand in front of his opponent so if Darchinyan lands that left hand that he likes to land I think it’s going to be a tough night for Yonnhy, but we know that Yonnhy has a great chin. If Yonnhy puts pressure on him and we know Darchinyan is not able to handle that pressure I think Darchinyan is going to have trouble so I really don’t have a pick here, I just know it’s going to be a great fight.”
