Expert: Obama’s address on Armenian Genocide has no legal force

Turkologist Artak Shakaryan said that if U.S. President Barack Obama pronounces the term ‘Armenian Genocide’, it will be an influential statement, but having no legal force.

Armenians should not attach great importance to it, Shakaryan told a press conference in Yerevan.

According to him, it is more important that the U.S. Congress recognize the Armenian Genocide, adding that President Reagan’s statements on the Genocide have not changed anything.

Shakaryan noted that Armenians should take the legal path. He pointed to the recent claims submitted by representatives of the Armenian Diaspora against Turkey, what has resulted in panic in the country, as Turkey conceives that it can do nothing in the legal field.

Another Turkologist, Hakob Chakryan, is confident that Obama will not use the term “Genocide” in his annual April 24 address.

According to him, it is proved by the fact that contrary to previous years Turkey has not sent a delegation to the U.S. to prevent the resolution adoption by the U.S. Congress or Armenian Genocide recognition by the country’s President.

“Turkey’s confidence is based on the fact that it plays a very important role in the U.S. plans for the Iranian problem, Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as with respect to recent developments in the Arab states,” said Chakryan.

He urged the Armenian American Diaspora to refrain from unbalanced steps, if their expectations are not met once again.

He recalled the Armenian community’s reaction to Nancy Pelosi’s decision not to put the Armenian Genocide Resolution to voting, as she knew that it will not be adopted, while the community labeled her as betrayer.
