EUROPEAN PRESS ACTIVE COMMENTS UPON THE RECOGNITION OF THE ARMENIAN GENOCIDE BY THE FRENCH NATIONAL ASSEMBLY
19.01.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. French papers are actively commenting upon the January 18 passage of Armenian resolution by the National Assembly of France.
The Armenian Diaspora in French urged the parliament to approve the Resolution, and now the Bill, passed last November by the French Senate, must be approved by the French President Jacques Chirac within 12 days, "Le Monde" reports.
Passage of the bill "caused a long-term quarrel between Paris and Ankara", "Eko" writes.
The German "Tagesspiegel" paper writes that Ankara took this decision very badly. "The fact that Turkey denies the terrible historical events and tries to use threats to prevent the revaluation of its own past, can hardly be the indicative of the democracy of the Turkish authorities", the paper writes.
"Perhaps the EU emissaries' ideas concerning the real meaning of the Western values system and human rights respect were not clear enough for Turkey, longing to the European Union", "Tagespiegel" writes. --0--
