CIS AND TRANSCAUCASIAN REGION THE FIRST IN AIDS-INFECTED PEOPLE GROWTH
01.12.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. "The CIS and the whole Transcaucasian region are the first in the world in the growth speed of AIDS infected people", declared today the director of the Armenian Center for AIDS Prophylaxis Samvel Grigorian at a press conference in the UN Yerevan Office.
According to Grigorian, the first HIV-infected in Armenia were fixed in 1988. Today their number in the country makes 134, from whom 100 men (75%) and 34 (25%) women.
People between 20-39 years of age make the majority of AIDS-infected. According to the presented statistics, no HIV-infected newborn children have been fixed in Armenia up to now. As Grigorian noted, 54% of the men got infected with this disease using drugs through intravenous way, while the women through sexual intercourse. According to Grigorian's data, the number of drug addicts in Armenia is 19-23 thousand, from them 300-350 HIV-infected.
"The drug addict must be considered as a sick, and not a potential criminal, and doctors should carry out prophylactic works with him", noted the director of the center.
This year an AIDS case as a result of blood transfusion was also fixed in Nagorno Karabakh Republic. -0-
