Iranian MP: Tehran doesn't need nuclear weapons

Iran does not need nuclear weapons or missiles that could carry nuclear warheads, a member of the foreign policy and national security commission of the Iranian parliament, Kazem Jalali stated.

“Iran has … been carrying out covert ballistic missile tests and rocket launches, including testing missiles capable of delivering a nuclear payload in contravention of UN resolution 1929,” Foreign Secretary William Hague told parliament.

Iranian Foreign Ministry official Ramin Mehmanparast denied this information.

According to Jalali, Iran informs public about its achievements in the production of missiles. "The Islamic Republic of Iran has repeatedly stated that it is not interested in producing nuclear weapons. The public is informed about the achievements in the production of missiles. Our achievements in this sphere are not kept secret. Countries like Britain, Israel and the U.S. are interested in the psychological war against Iran and putting pressure on it," Trend News quoted Jalali as saying.

The U.S. and other Western countries accuse Iran of developing nuclear weapons under cover of peaceful nuclear energy program. Tehran denies the charges, saying its nuclear program is exclusively peaceful. So far, the UN Security Council has adopted six resolutions to stop Iran's nuclear program and uranium enrichment process. Four of these resolutions envisage economic sanctions against the country.
