Yerevan will have one more trash dump

There will be one more trash dump in Yerevan in 2012, according to the head of the department of development and investment programs at Yerevan Municipality.

As Eduard Nersisyan said during Yerevan-Moscow TV spacebridge, the waste management situation in the capital is disastrous, with Yerevan far behind international standards for heavy waste disposal.

“At present, 4 trash dumps are operating in Yerevan, one of them (Nubarashen dump) providing for 85% of the city population's needs. Annually, 230-300 thousand tons of waste is delivered at Nubarashen dump, therefore here's where the major part of our investments will be directed to,” he noted.

To resolve current situation, a bill on waste disposal and sanitary cleansing of the city was worked out, the municipality official said. The law envisages obligatory payment for waste disposal; in July a tender to select 2 waste disposal operators will be announced. “The Municipality will take charge of payment collection, while operators will be responsible for technical function,” Nersisyan said.
