MP: to counterbalance Azeri threats, OSCE MG should warn of NKR recognition

PanARMENIAN.Net - Member of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia, MP Gagik Minasyan supposes that to counterbalance Azerbaijan’s threats, the OSCE Minsk Group countries should warn Baku of possible recognition of Nagorno Karabakh.

“This is an inevitable development of the current processes,” Minasyan told a press conference on August 17, reminding of the Deauville statement which called on the conflicting sides to prepare the people for peace, not war.

He also reminded of the recent statement by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev who preferred “endless talks” to war.

As to recognition of Artsakh independence by Armenia, Minasyan said it will be done “at the most convenient moment.”

The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan

The conflict between Nagorno Karabakh and Azerbaijan broke out as result of the ethnic cleansing launched by the Azeri authorities in the final years of the Soviet Union. The Karabakh War was fought from 1991 (when the Nagorno Karabakh Republic was proclaimed) to 1994 (when a ceasefire was sealed by Armenia, NKR and Azerbaijan). Most of Nagorno Karabakh and a security zone consisting of 7 regions are now under control of NKR defense army. Armenia and Azerbaijan are holding peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group up till now.
