No hidden motives in authorities-opposition meeting delay - coalition

Head of coalition’s working group Davit Harutyunyan advised against searching for hidden motives in the postponement of the regular meeting between the authorities and the Armenian National Congress (ANC).

“We also agreed with the ANC representatives not to comment on the decision to call off the gathering,” Harutyunyan told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter.

Earlier today, it was announced that the sides agreed to convene the meeting at 12.00 noon next Tuesday, August 23.

The talks between the authorities and opposition launched on July 18, with the agenda consisting of two issues: conduction of extraordinary elections and development of canons of political competition.

According to the ANC, on August 9 police officers used violence against ANC activists Tigran Arakelyan and Artak Karapetyan. Upon arrival to the site, activists Areg Gevorgyan, Sahak Muradyan, Vahagn Gevorgyan, Sargis Gevorgyan and David Kirimajyan tried to settle the dispute but were beaten as well, the ANC said. All above-mentioned were taken to a police station. On their part, the police accused the ANC activists of assault.

Currently, Tigran Arakelyan, Artak Karapetyan and Sargis Gevorgyan are kept in custody. The others were released.
