POSSIBLE TRANSIT OF ELECTRICITY TO TURKEY VIA ARMENIA WAS DISCUSSED YET IN 1997

PanARMENIAN.Net - 25.10.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. A reliable source in Moscow informed Mediamax that the question on the transit of the Russian electricity to Turkey via Armenia was discussed during the visit of the Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Kasyanov and the chairman of the board of the "RAO EES Rossii" (Russian JSC United Energy System) Anatoliy Chubays to Turkey.

First time the question on the export of the Russian electricity to Turkey via Armenia was touched upon in the beginning of 1997 when the constitutive agreement of the Armenian-Russian "ArmRosGasprom" JV was signed in Moscow. Transit of the Russian gas to third states via the Armenian territory, joint production and transit of the energy to third states was among the main directions of the JV's activity.

Armenia and Russia agreed on joint delivery of electricity to Turkey at the volume of 3 bln kWt/h with use of Russian gas at idle energy sites of Armenia.

In May of 1997, after the meeting with the head of Gasprom Russian JSC Ram Viakhirev the Armenian then-Prime Minister Robert Kocharian said: "Mr. Viakhirev and I share the opinion that our cooperation is perspective, and "ArmRosGasprom" is able and must play a serious role in the region."

The President of ITERA-Holding Company Valeriy Otchertsov stated July 24, 2000 in an interview to Prime-Tass: "Together with "RAO EES Rossii" and "RosEnergoAtom" concern we suggected to the Armenian government to form a joint enterprise. It is hard to make prognoses on the decision to be made by the Armenian government regarding this question, and on the share ITERA may have in the JV in case it is created. We are not much concerned about our share in the project. The most important is that the sums will be used for profitable projects, I mean the projects on export of electricity from Armenia to Turkey via the Georgia or directly from Armenia. --0--
