EU to foster presence in Armenia in the wake of Warsaw Summit

EU is likely to foster its activity in Armenia in the wake of Warsaw Summit.

“If visa regime mandate with EaP countries is adopted in Warsaw, the mission will foster its activity in Yerevan,” Head of the European Commission Delegation to Armenia Raul de Luzenberger said at Yerevan-hosted conference on Fostering Civil Society's role in EaP countries.

Luzenberger touched upon the issue of civil society as one of the key factors of European integration.

In turn Vache Kalashyan, Armenian National Platform member, noted that there are gaps in the Armenian society in terms of wide involvement in domestic policy. He stated that the National Platform is willing to enlarge frames of collaboration with EU structures.

The Eastern Partnership summit of heads of states and governments of EU countries will be held on September 29-30 in Warsaw. During the summit there will be an informal dinner, two plenary sessions, and a common declaration will be signed.

The EU Eastern Partnership project was presented by the Polish Foreign Minister at the Council of General Affairs and External Relations in 2008 attended by Sweden. The project is an amendment to the Northern Dimension and Mediterranean Union, serving as a basis for discussions on visa and free trade agreements and strategic partnership with eastern neighboring countries, replacing the discussions on EU extension and admission of those states. Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine and Belarus are involved in Eastern Partnership project.
