TURKS BURN ARMENIAN FLAG TO PROTEST GENOCIDE BILL
25.09.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. Demonstrators in Turkey's southern city of Adana burnt on Sunday an Armenian flag and American-made goods to protest the possible recognizing of the Armenian Genocide of 1915 by the U.S. Congress.
The demonstration, organized by 16 NGOs, took place in front of the US consulate, reports MEDIAMAX. We will remind you that the tension between Ankara and Washington aroused after the Subcommittee of US Congress House of Representatives adopted the bill recognizing the Genocide of Armenians of 1915.
"We strongly condemn the decision of the subcommittee, which distorts history", said the spokesman of the demonstrators. He called the Turkish people to boycott US products if the House approves the draft bill.
Turkey has warned the United States that the adoption of the bill would seriously harm the friendly ties between the two countries and further damage Ankara's already chilly relations with Yerevan. -0-
