MP: Armenian President’s speech in UN can be discussed at Euronest

The head of the Armenian delegation to Euronest and member of ARF Dashnaktsutyun parliamentary group Vahan Hovhannisyan commented on the recent statement by a member of Azerbaijani delegation to Euronest, Asim Mollazade, who claimed that the Armenian President’s speech at the UN General Assembly was an “infringement of legal norms” and wished to discuss it during the Euronest session.

“The reaction of Asim Mollazade is not a surprise for the Armenian side,” Hovhannisyan told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter.

“If Mollazade or another Azerbaijani delegate proposes to discuss the RA president’s speech at a Euronest session, I will actively participate in the discussion,” he said. “It would be a very interesting debate, as its details would not guarantee a positive outcome for the initiators.”

Hovhannisyan emphasized that the format of Euronest does not envisage discussion of speeches made in the past. “Even if the speech by a state official, like Ilham Aliyev, full of anti-Armenian rhetoric would be discussed, no Parliamentary Assembly has the legal power to make a judgment or resolution on that particular speech,” he said.

The MP described the speech delivered by President Sargsyan as balanced and even cautious.

“The detailed review and comparison of the speeches made by Ilham Aliyev and Serzh Sargsyan would reveal who is the real aggressor and who pursues the policy of xenophobia. Thus, the idea of a discussion proposed by Mollazade is highly welcomed,” he noted.
