Davit Harutyunyan says he is disinterested in NA speaker post

The head of Standing Parliamentary Committee for State and Legal Issues, member of ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) expressed lack of interest in a soon-to-be-vacated parliament speaker’s post.

As Davit Harutyunyan told journalists, commenting on the possibility for him to replace Hovik Abrahamyan as parliament speaker, no discussions as to candidates for the post were held, nor does he have any personal preferences on the issue.

Harutyunyan ascribed Abrahamyan’s decision to resign by the latter’s wish to fully focus on election campaign, considering the heated struggle ahead.

In conclusion, Harutyunyan urged against drawing parallels between recent resignations, there being “no link between resignation of the speaker and Police Chief.” The politician refused to give any forecasts as to possibility of further resignations.

As reported on November 1, Armenian parliament speaker Hovik Abrahamyan will resign his position to head RPA electoral headquarters. As Abrahamyan told journalists after RPA council sitting, after the Party’s suggesting him to head electoral headquarters, he resolved to give up the speaker’s post to more effectively conduct the campaign.

Earlier, Armenian Police Chief Alik Sargsyan was relieved of his post with Deputy Defense Minister Vladimir Gasparyan to replace him.
