RA NA speakers’ resignation signals start of election race in Armenia

Armenian National Assembly speaker believes his resignation to head election headquarters of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia signaled the launch of election race in Armenia. As Hovik Abrahamyan stated on Armenian television, “organization of fair and transparent elections is a priority task to RPA and Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan.”

“While certain political forces might neglect their responsibility for the future of Armenia, the leader of RPA, Armenian President must do his best to organize fair elections to prove our efforts in implementing reforms weren’t futile,” Abrahamyan stressed.

While Armenian law allows combining positions of the speaker and the head of the campaign, Abrahamyan said he chose the latter to prove his adherence to President Sargsyan and RPA, rather than his post.

Abrahamyan refused to access the results of his work as an RA NA speaker, leaving it to coalition and opposition parliamentary parties. “Still, I hope that over 3 years, I succeeded in achieving a well- coordinated work at the parliament,” he concluded.

As reported on November 1, Armenian parliament speaker Hovik Abrahamyan will resign his position to head RPA electoral headquarters. As Abrahamyan told journalists after RPA council sitting, after the Party’s suggesting him to head electoral headquarters, he resolved to give up the speaker’s post to more effectively conduct the campaign.

Abrahamyan will officially resign his post at November 14 parliamentary sitting.
