THE EX-MINISTER OF DEFENSE OF RNK SAMVEL BABAYAN HAS GONE ON HUNGER-STRIKE

PanARMENIAN.Net - 21.07.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. The ex-minister of defense of the Republic of Nagorno Karabakh, General-Lieutenant Samvel Babayan, accused of the organization of the terrorist act against the president of RNK Arkady Ghukasian on March 22, 2000, has gone on hunger-strike.

It is said in the declaration of Samvel Babayan, published today in Yerevan papers, that after being arrested in 1991 by Azeri authorities he has had a pneumonia, owing to which he is suffering badly from fits of coughing. "But during the four months spent behind bars, I've been deprived of the possibility to breath fresh air, as I'm barred from daily walks specified by the law. All my protests in this connection have been ignored. Besides, I'm not allowed to smoke cigarettes containing little nicotine which adversely affects my health condition", reads the statement of Samvel Babayan.

The ex-minister of defense of RNK also declared that he demands transferring the trial to Armenia. -0-
