THE FORTHCOMING ASCENT OF THE MOUNT ARARAT HAS A PEACE-MAKING MISSION, DECLARED THE ORGANIZERS OF THE ACTION.
19.07.2000, MEDIAMAX, YEREVAN. "Our ascent of the mount Ararat is not a political action, our purposes are just peace-making", declared today at the press conference in Yerevan the organizer of the upcoming on July 29 ascent of the Mt. Ararat, Ghazar Mirzoyan.
According to Mr. Mirzoyan, groups from Armenia and Turkey will take part in the ascent. On the part of Armenia 45 people will participate in the expedition, 30 of which are foreigners, and 20 people will participate from Turkey. According to the preliminary information, the author of the popular program " The club of film travelers" Yuri Senkevich was to be among the participants, but "for some reasons unknown to the organizers" he is not going participating in the ascent.
As Mr. Mirzoyan affirms, each participant has undergone a thorough medical examination, and those to whom the ascent is contra-indicated will reach only Noah's Ark, located at the height of 4300 meters. About 3500 dollars are spent on each of the participants, 90 % of the expenses are going to pay the organizers of the ascent. The sponsors of the action are the Armenian "Hyusisapail" company and the Turkish "Igdir" tourist firm. The Turkish side will take care of all the food expenses. The expedition will last 10 days. The flags of Armenia and Turkey will be placed on the top of the mountain.
After the expedition "The Pilgrims Club" will be set up, in the composition of which the participants of the ascent will be included; their aim will be to conquer the sacred heights of the world.
Mount Ararat (5165 meters), which is a biblical sacred mountain and one of the symbols of the Armenian nation, is located on the territory of Turkey.
Earlier the attempts of Armenian alpinists were suppressed by the Turkish authorities. In September 1999 the Turkish authorities, despite the consent given before , refused to allow the Armenian alpinists to ascent Mt. Ararat. At the foot of the mountain, the representatives of the military and local Turkish authorities made the Armenian alpinists give up the ascent.
The Armenian alpinists have also tried to ascent to Ararat without an official permission in 1995, but they had to return at the height of 3200 meters on the demand of the Turkish soldiers. -0-
