Expert: Armenian Genocide problem back to political-legal field

The problem of the Armenian Genocide, which has followed a wrong route since 1965, i.e. international acknowledgement and condemnation, was brought back to the political-legal field by the decision of France Senate, which implies compensation as well, Director of the Institute of History at the RA National Academy of Sciences said.

“In 1965, when commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Genocide, Armenians took to the streets claiming for justice and compensation, however later they were easily caught in Turkish trap, focusing just at international acknowledgement, putting off any compensation demands,” Ashot Melkonyan told a press conference in Yerevan.

“No self-respecting historian in the world would dispute the fact of the Armenian Genocide and discuss this matter,” he noted.

On January 23, the French Senate passed the bill criminalizing denial of the Armenian Genocide.
