"UES OF RUSSIA" HEAD FOR FORMING JOINT ENERGY SYSTEM OF SOUTH CAUCASUS
Head of "United Energy Systems (UES) of Russia" Anatoly Chubays is for creation of a joint energy system of the South Caucasus, he told journalists in Yerevan upon completion of negotiations with the Armenian prime minister. Chubays emphasized that the energy system of Armenia is not the only one that operates being isolated from those of the CIS countries. "It reduces the reliability of energy supplies in Armenia, as well as the opportunity for export and import to other countries," he added. In the words of the head of "UES of Russia," not technical, but political problems hamper the formation of the joint energy system of the region. "It seems to me there are reasons for trying to move them aside and solve real practical issues," he said. At that he noted that point of view was in harmony with the stand of the leadership of Armenia. "Being given the Yerevan stand and at the same time owning key energy objects of Armenia we can start conversation with our Azeri colleagues," Chubays said. "We have new arguments to solve the issue," he added. "At the initial stage there is the task of restoring the simultaneous work of the energy systems of Armenia and Azerbaijan, which is favorable for energy systems of both countries even if the export-import balance is equal to zero," Chubays emphasized. "At the second stage projects of joint access to third countries can emerge," he said. In Chubays' words, "such a country may be Turkey, where there are quite serious intentions." At that he added that at present "UES of Russia" is preparing to participate in privatization of energy distribution systems of Turkey.
