Electoral Code won’t be changed before May - Free Democrats rep

Armenia’s Electoral Code is unlikely to be changed before the parliamentary race in May, Free Democrats party representative noted, commenting on a possibility of a full shift to proportional electoral system.

As Alexander Arzumanyan noted, currently, the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) seems the only one to support the majority system.

“Whether Prosperous Armenia party will support the initiative will become clear at February 15 parliamentary hearings. Free Democrats, however, won’t be nominating candidates in majority districts on principle,” the politician stressed.

On February 1, RA NA standing committee on state and legal affairs scheduled parliamentary hearings on a full shift to proportional electoral system for February 15.

On January 26, Prosperous Armenia coalition party jointly with Heritage and ARF Dashnaktsutyun opposition parties requested Armenian National Assembly speaker Samvel Nikoyan and the chairman of NA standing committee on state and legal affairs David Harutyunyan to organize parliamentary hearings on full shift to proportional electoral system.

On December 27, Heritage and ARF Dashnaktsutyun opposition parties issued a joint statement urging for a full shift to proportional system.
