Gael Garcia Bernal picked as Zorro Reborn star

PanARMENIAN.Net - The man who is going to wield the sword in upcoming "Zorro Reborn" has just been revealed. 20th Century Fox has tapped Mexican actor Gael Garcia Bernal to tackle the role of the Spanish masked outlaw in this new take of "Zorro" flick, Aceshowbiz reported.

Instead of taking place during the Spanish colonial era in the 18th century like its original story, the movie will be set in the future during a desolate and post-apocalyptic time. "In this version, Zorro will be less a caped crusader for justice than a one-man vigilante force bent on revenge, in a western story that has echoes of both Sergio Leone and 'No Country for Old Men'," so it's explained.

Glenn Gers ("Mad Money") reportedly is writing the script along with Lee Shipman and Brian McGreevy, the scribes who penned "Dracula" reboot "Harker". No director has been hired for this forthcoming big-screen project.

The Zorro story has been adapted into more than forty movies and a number of TV series. The last film adaptation of Zorro was Michael Campbell's "The Legend of Zorro", which starred Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Released in 2005, the film grossed more than $142, 4 million internationally.

Gael Garcia Bernal himself has played in at least six Oscar-nominated films. One of them was 2004's "The Motorcycle Diaries", where he portrayed Argentine Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara. Through the role, he was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role at 2005 BAFTAs. His next movies include "Casa de Mi Padre" which stars Will Ferrell.
