TURKEY REFRAINED FROM SHOWING ATOM EGOYAN'S "ARARAT"
Atom Egoyan's "Ararat" film recounting the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire will not be shown in Turkey. "Belge" Turkish company possessing the right of demonstration took the decision proceeding from the will of the Turkish people. According to the statement, Ankara, not taking the approaches presented in the film seriously, was ready to show it. The company holds the opinion that by demonstrating the film, Turkey would appear before the whole world as a strong state with new horizons opening for it. Meanwhile, the company considers that there are significant reasons for refraining from such a perspective, as "Ararat" does not possess great cultural values. Besides, in case of showing the film, extreme safeguards should be provided in the cinemas, this not befitting Turkey. As reported by "Milliyet" Turkish newspaper, Atom Egoyan expressed regret on account of the decision taken, noting that such an outcome was not a surprise for him.
