Iran’ Ahmadinejad faces questions in parliament

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad attended morning session of Majlis to answer 10 questions posed by 79 members of the parliament.

Ali Motahari, an MP from Tehran, read out the questions, with President Ahmadinejad given an hour to offer his answers.

The questions included the decisions and performance of President Ahmadinejad’s government on such issues as Tehran underground system, economic growth rate, implementation of the subsidiary plan and cultural budget.

250 reporters from domestic and foreign media and press were present in the parliament to cover the session, state news agency IRNA said.

According to Reuters, the president has been widely accused of wasting resources on government handouts and critics say his withdrawal of food and fuel subsidies has resulted in rampant inflation.

He was also accused of botching the financing of the extension to the Tehran metro system and quizzed on the veracity of government figures showing 1.6 million jobs were created in 2009 and 2010.

Attacks against Ahmadinejad have been partly fuelled by a rift between him and supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei that became public last year.
