“EVERYTHING SAID ABOUT REFUGEES IN AZERBAIJAN IS LIE”Irada Husseynova, an out- of- favor journalist from Baku says. The number of political prisoners has not reduced in Azerbaijan. Among them there are lots of journalists whose only fault is that they do not want to hide the truth. Recently, saving herself from pursuits of the government officials, Irada Husseynova, a well known journalist, correspondent of the “Bakinskie Vedomosti” newspaper, applied to the German government asking a political asylum. Three criminal cases have been framed up against her. Among those who have made accusations against the journalist, were the brother of the country’s President, Jalil Aliyev, Defense Minister Safar Abiyev, Health Minister Ali Insanov, Minister of Culture Polad Byul-byul Oghli, Mayor of Baku Abutalibov. In 1999 Husseynova was sentenced to a one year imprisonment. Recently, the repressions have restarted. She was again suited because of new publications. ![]() PanARMENIAN.Net - Which was the fault of the journalist? She frequently published articles about illegal activity of the clan of Aliyevs, and the President didn’t like this. But the repressions got stronger when she started to draw attention to the problems of refugees. It was after the publication of the article about falsifications around the number of refugees, when her apartment was illegally sequestrated with an intention to sell it through an auction. None of the media had the courage to publish the analytical article prepared by the journalist. That is why the article can be read only on the site of the union of human right protectors called “Movement for Rescue of Azerbaijan”. “The main part of things said about the refugees is either stereotype or just a lie”. This is a quotation from the article which expresses its main idea. According to Husseynova, the lies spread by the Baku authorities, are meant first of all for foreign readers. “The visits to tent towns where refugees live are the important part of programs of all the visitors. During the last five years the Presidents of all the CIS countries, both Presidents of Turkey, and other officials visiting Azerbaijan have been here,” the journalist writes. “Today they announce to the world community that there are one million refugees in Azerbaijan. The President, members of government, politicians, Parliament deputies and some media repeat this figure every now and then. But if we sum up the number of refugees from Armenia and forced migrants, we will see that this figure is exaggerated,” Irada Husseynova continues. And what is the real situation? The author draws the attention that the figures contradict even the official statistics. “According to the last data of the statistical administration, the number of forced migrants is 568 989 and the refugees – 219776. Summing up, it will make 788 765 people but not one million,” the article reads. Besides, Husseynova has no doubts that the figures of the official statistics are also exaggerated. “Many international organizations doubt the figures of the state statistical service,” she writes. Then Husseynova speaks about the number of population of the Nagorno Karabakh autonomous region ten years ago, which now is being controlled by Armenian forces. It appears that about 480 people lived there. It is known that from them at least 160 000 were Armenians, Curds and Russians, which up to now live on their land. A part of 320 thousand Azerbaijanis living here now live out of the territory of Azerbaijan. So, from these figures it follows that the number of the forced migrants can not be more than 300 thousand. Plus 160-170 thousand Azerbaijanis arrived in Azerbaijan from Armenia, and we will have about 460 thousand refugees, it means twice less than the Baku authorities say. According to Husseynova, “one third part of the forced migrants live in tents, they live at the expense of rare humanitarian aid and very low pensions paid by the state. Some of them leave for Baku in order to find ay kind of work, in Baku there are several markets called “gul bazar (market of slaves)”, the journalist writes. Let’s agree that it is difficult to compare the described picture with the tales which the authors of the myth on “strength of the oil state” tell about Azerbaijan. Irada Husseynova stresses that many of the refugees are not going to return to their motherland in case if a peace agreement is concluded. ”We should admit that most of them do not have any will to return. Only those who live in tents will go back to their motherland,” the author of the article notes concluding that the authorities deliberately keep the refugees in such concentration camps, in order not to allow them to integrate into the society. “From the point of view of state interests, the integration of refugees is not very desirable,” Husseynova thinks, as in that case it will be more difficult to send them back to the places where they used to live. As far as the refugees from Armenia are concerned, they will never return, because the Azerbaijanis living here, according to Husseynova, have never considered the land to be there’s. “The Azerbaijanis from Armenia have always understood that they live not on their land and were ready sooner or later to abandon the places they live in,” the article reads. The article focuses also on the issue of Armenians – refugees from Azerbaijan, which were about 400 thousand. “Only in Baku about 220 thousand Armenians lived,” Husseynova writes. “Only few of them managed to sell their houses. Most of them were seized...” The impartial information and truthful assessments contained in the article of Irada Husseynova, have caused the anger of the Azerbaijani authorities.
