Kosovo's Independence Day hasn't been determined yet

According to the Russian experts, there are three basic scenarios for the development of the situation around Kosovo.

The question of Kosovo independence is still hanging in the air. The EU leaders haven't managed to come to an agreement over the most important things; i.e. whether they should grant independence to the territory now or wait a little bit more. Russia in this issue is fighting to the bitter end. "Russia will support the Kosovo issue regulation on the basis of the decision made by the UN Security Council, as well as taking into consideration the interests of Belgrade and Pristine. As for the international consequences of the one-sided proclamation of Kosovo independence, it should be mentioned that it will certainly become a model, and not because we say so, but because this will happen," said the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Russia Sergey Lavrov.
PanARMENIAN.Net - He also mentioned that recognizing Kosovo's independence the Western countries destabilize the situation. "The recognition of Kosovo's independence without Serbia's agreement will be violation of international law," said Lavrov.

In its turn the USA isn't going to give up its viewpoint either. "The United States will "lock" Russia's suggestion in the UN Security Council about prolonging the negotiations on Kosovo issue. We have completely adverse opinions about the Kosovo issue. We think that the negotiations have totally expired themselves," declared the US Ambassador to the UN Zalmay Khalilzad

Albania has taken almost a neutral position in the issue, while this is the country which is interested the most in the independence of the country, where 2 million ethnic Albanians live. "Albania will not be the first to recognize the one-sided proclamation of Kosovo independence, since our viewpoint and policy coincides with that of the international community and international public viewpoint," declared the President of the Republic of Albania Bamir Topi. In his opinion Albania has always carried and will still carry the role of the mediator, as well as of a stabilizing factor. "This is fixed in our inner policy. Albania and its governmental bodies think that if in a 100-day period no solution is found, we are going to approve the Resolution of the Ahtisaari plan. Albania did its best to reach this goal, and the regulation of the Kosovo issue will have its own irreplaceable asset in fortifying long-term stability. I don't think that the security of the Balkans will be under risk. And when the three countries of the Adriatic; i.e. Albania, Croatia, and Macedonia are integrated into the EU the stability of the region will be provided for a pretty long time," said Topi. He also mentioned that the regulation of Kosovo problem will physiologically liberate Serbia and it will move towards the Euro-Atlantic integration, says Eurnonews. "I think that security will be under a great threat in the Balkans. And when the three countries of the Adriatic Albania, Croatia and Macedonia are accepted into NATO, the stability in the region will be ensured for a rather long time," emphasized Topi. He also mentioned that the Kosovo problem resolution will grant psychological freedom to Serbia and it will redirect towards Euro-Atlantic integration, says Euronews.

Some experts connect this delay of Kosovo independence proclamation with the upcoming presidential elections in Serbia. The speaker of the Serbian Parliament Oliver Dulich fixed the date of the Presidential elections on January 20th. Fixing the date of the elections was the issue of continuous arguments among different representatives of coalition government of the country.

In the opinion of experts of "the Russian newspaper", there are three basic scenarios for the development of the situation around Kosovo.

The first possible scenario is the longest and the most complicated one; it is the continuation of the negotiations as the only way of realizing the compromising decision handy for both countries and avoiding the continuing crisis with unpredictable consequences. This kind of development is not at all convenient for the Albanians, who already think they are the full owners of Kosovo.

The second scenario is just the opposite of the first one; the immediate proclamation of the independence of the country. The Prime Minster of Kosovo Hashim Thaçi has more than once mentioned this possibility. This development of events no doubt is very convenient for the USA and its close allies for NATO, which have repeatedly announced about their readiness of recognizing the newly proclaimed state. But this is something unacceptable for Belgrade.

According to a number of specialists' assessments the third scenario is not excluded either, which presupposes the almost forgotten variant of division of Kosovo according to ethnic borders. In certain conditions and pressure from outside it would possibly be convenient for both parties. However, this kind of development is very likely to bring along many problems for the West. Everybody realizes, that this kind of requirements in case of recognition of Kosovo by the EU and the USA, may be set by the Serbs living in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which can upset the already tenuous agreements, which have out an end to the civil war in this country.
