RA Foreign Minister: Armenian government won't conspire behind people's back

PanARMENIAN.Net - Resolution of RA Constitutional Court on Armenia-Turkey Protocols is in keeping with the statements the Armenian President made both in Armenia and during his Pan-Armenian tour, as well as in the presidential address of October 10, 2009, Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian said.

"In fact, suppositions of any pressure on RA CC are absurd," he noted.

Dwelling on the possibility of Turkey's delaying ratification of the Protocols till April 2010, Minister Nalbandian said that Turkey is surely aware of April 2010's not being the last April.

Commenting on Turkish President Abdullah Gul's statements on active though silent diplomacy conducted with Armenia, which includes discussion of frozen conflicts, RA Foreign Minister noted that Armenian government won't conspire behind people's back. "Bilateral discussions with Turkish authorities were solely related to Armenia-Turkey relations," he stressed, reiterating that the two countries negotiated normalization of bilateral ties and reached agreement without preconditions.

"Should one of the parties create impediments and drag out the process, it will be the one to bear responsibility," the Minister emphasized and added that if Turkey pulls back, it will both violate agreements with Armenia and dent its international image, RFE/RL reported.

The Protocols aimed at normalization of bilateral ties and opening of the border between Armenia and Turkey were signed in Zurich by Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian and his Turkish counterpart Ahmet Davutoglu on October 10, 2009, after a series of diplomatic talks held through Swiss mediation.

On January 12, 2010, the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Armenia found the protocols conformable to the country's Organic Law.
