PACE Bureau does not send delegations to zones of frozen conflicts

PanARMENIAN.Net - Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) President Mevlut Cavusoglu said that Speaker of the NRK parliament Ashot Ghulyan sent a letter to the PACE Bureau, asking to send observers for the parliamentary elections in Stepanakert. “I included this issue in the Bureau agenda in April, and it was decided to not send a mission of observers. According to the established tradition, the Bureau does not send delegations to zones of frozen conflicts,” Mevlut Cavusoglu told a press conference in Yerevan.

As for resumption of activity of the PACE Sub-Committee on Nagorno Karabakh, Cavusoglu said that this issue has been on the Bureau’s agenda for a year.

“As a PACE President, I should follow the possible resumption of the committee’s activity, unless a decision is adopted on it. I had separate meetings with heads of the Armenian and Azerbaijani delegations to PACE. We are going to organize unofficial meetings of delegations and decided to involve opposition representatives in them – one from each side. These meetings will continue, unless the PACE Bureau adopts a final decision,” Cavusoglu stressed.

Speaking about his nationality, the PACE President said that first of all he is the leader of the Assembly, who should fulfill his obligations, despite anything. Mevlut Cavusoglu had been head of the Turkish delegation prior to his election to the post of PACE President.
